Handheld Stories provides the equipment (video cameras, computers for editing and video projectors), the volunteers (industry professionals and educators) and the curriculum for a wholesale video training experience. At the culmination of these workshops, Handheld trainees have acquired the skills necessary for semi-professional video production and online sharing.
Over a period of 1 to 2 weeks, Handheld trainees receive hands on training in the field: their neighborhoods, their streets, their homes. Handheld provides oversight of the process by working with community and team leaders who have an awareness and knowledge of the candidates.
After only a few days and working in teams, students are encouraged to strike out on their own and capture the stories they feel best represents their own experiences of living where they live and growing up the way they do. Handheld volunteers offer constructive feedback throughout the process.
After capturing their footage, participants are taught the mechanics and techniques used in editing films. Using simple editing programs, participants learn the basics of editing thereby empowering the creation of personal narratives. Their polished narratives then live on a variety of online platforms.
Anyone, really. We've taught Tibetan monks in India to preserve and protect the teachings of HH The Dalai Lama, adults in Nepali villages who got their messages to members of their government, and numerous school-aged kids worldwide.
Trainees are boys and girls, (usually) ranging in age from 10 on up, but there are no hard and fast rules. We've taught adults and kids younger than 10 as well.
Candidates are selected after being recommended by community and youth leaders who have an intimate knowledge of the candidates or their situation. Handheld volunteers work with a variety of skill sets scaffolding the early adopters of this process into a student-as-mentor role.
Every community has stories that the world needs to hear, yet the tools to tell those stories are often out of reach. Handheld Stories partners with established non-profits, NGOs, and community organizations to bridge that gap. We don’t just teach technical skills; we provide a platform for your youth and members to reclaim their own narratives.
By hosting a Handheld Stories workshop, you provide your participants with a transformative, professional-grade experience where they transition from media consumers to media creators.
Our curriculum, led by industry professionals, empowers students to document their own streets and homes, resulting in polished, semi-professional films that give your community a digital voice and a lasting legacy.

Whether your community is equipped with the latest tech or we are leveraging the power of mobile filmmaking on smartphones, our goal remains the same: high-impact storytelling.
Investing in your community’s creative future is a collaborative effort. While there are costs associated with bringing our professional team and equipment to your site, you are not alone in the process. We work hand-in-hand with our host partners to navigate fundraising and identify potential sponsorships to make these workshops a reality. Together, we can equip the next generation of creators with the tools they need to share their truth with the world.
